Public speaking is one of our biggest fears. Some say that we even fear public speaking more that we fear death. These tips on public speaking will help you to give a more confident speech.
- Practice, practice and practice some more. Read your speech out loud, no matter how silly that may initially appear. Watch out for places that you stumble - these are the places that need attention in your writing and should be re-written. If you can get to the stage of being able to give your speech without notes, that's superb. But don't be afraid to keep your notes handy so that you can refer to them if you suddenly get stage fright
- Get off to a good start by making a powerful introduction. The usual rule of "tell them what you're going to tell them" applies here. Make your introduction short and snappy. Keep your audience's attention and make them eager to hear the rest of your speech.
- Refer to your notes but don't just read them out in monotone. You should make eye contact with your audience, so you'll need to make sure that you can remember a few words ahead in your speech and look up from your cue cards.
- Don't use humor unless you know that all your audience has the same sense of humor as you do. There's almost nothing worse than the sound of silence after you've attempted a joke.
- Don't go on forever. Your audience will appreciate your speech much more if you get straight to the point. Unless you're being paid for the amount of time that you spend giving your speech, keep it brief. Depending on why you are giving a speech, you can sometimes allow questions from the audience to allow you to elaborate on any points that need further exploration.
Using these tips on public speaking will lead you to giving a more confident speech next time you are called on to demonstrate your speaking skills.
